Variable frequency drive

Variable frequency drive

Variable frequency drive is a type of adjustable speed drive used in electro-mechanical drive systems to control AC motor speed and torque by varying motor input frequency and voltage.

VFDs are used in applications ranging from small appliances to the largest of mine mill drives and compressors. They allow you to match the speed of the motor-driven equipment to the process requirement.

Significance:

Energy efficiency: by using a variable frequency drive, the motor rotation can be adjusted according to the requirements of the compressor.

Improved load control: VDFs are widely used for improving load controls in pumps and HVACs. They allow smooth operation and acceleration as they prevent load swings in transverse motions.

Regenerative energy: it allows generation of regenerative energy which can be converted into heat. The regenerated energy can also be sent to the source thus leading to higher energy savings.
